Closer to Now: Under the Effect of Form and Color
"Closer to Now: Under the Effect of Form and Color" held its opening reception on Thursday, September 25, 2025, and will be on display at the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum from September 22 to November 15.
The City of San Benito’s Cultural Arts Department (CAD) is delighted to welcome Erick B. Salazar for his first solo-exhibition in a museum space. Closer to Now: Under the Effect of Form & Color will be on view at the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum.
Rio Grande Valley native Erick Salazar began his path in the arts after his military service with the U. S. Marine Corps.
After receiving his B.F.A. in Sculpture and Painting from the University of North Texas in Denton, Salazar would start a career with the Water Production Department for San Antonio Water System — he would remain here for 9 years before making his official return to his artistic practice in 2021.
Closer to Now: Under the Effect of Form & Color presents Salazar and his body of work as they exist now — each piece is a reflection of the thoughts, emotions, and reactions he was feeling in the moment of their creation. Amplifying each piece’s existence as an anchor point in his life is an exploration of both technique and medium; many of the works included in Closer to Now represent a return to techniques used in his early artistic career but on new mediums and enhanced by his current understanding of his own process.

Opening Reception
The opening reception for "Closer to Now" was held on Thursday, September 25.
This collection of over 30 pieces — a mix of collage, paper types, canvas, wood, and paint bases — is a musical-visual experience. Each piece, from drip paint to precision-edge, multi-colored and multi-layered lines, has captured the rhythm and texture of family life in the South Texas region. His meticulous study of everyday life and introspective observations have a direct impact on his art — which often features an emphasis on the use of line, color, shape, and texture.
